Strength Training: One of the Best Investments You Can Make in Your Health

For many years, cardio has been considered the gold standard for good health. Walking, cycling, running and swimming are all fantastic ways to improve your heart and lungs, and we encourage everyone to stay active.

But there is another piece of the puzzle that deserves just as much attention: strength training.

Long-term research following nearly 150,000 adults over 30 years found that people who included regular resistance training alongside aerobic exercise enjoyed the greatest health benefits. Interestingly, you don't need to train every day. Around 60 to 120 minutes of strength training per week was associated with significant long-term health benefits. This is just 2 classes a week.

Why Strength Matters

Strength training isn't just about building muscle or lifting heavier weights.

It helps you:

  • Maintain muscle as you age.
  • Support healthy bones and joints.
  • Improve balance and coordination.
  • Make everyday activities easier.
  • Improve blood sugar regulation and metabolism.
  • Stay independent and active later in life.

Quite simply, the stronger your body is today, the more resilient it becomes for whatever life brings tomorrow.

Don't Choose Between Cardio and Strength

This isn't a choice between lifting weights or doing cardio.

The real magic happens when you do both.

Cardio keeps your heart and lungs healthy, while strength training helps build and maintain the muscles that allow you to move well, stay active and continue doing the things you love.

Together they create a foundation for long-term health, vitality and quality of life.

The Good News

You don't need to become an athlete.

Two or three strength sessions each week, combined with regular walking, cycling, running or other cardiovascular exercise, can make a remarkable difference over time.

The best exercise programme isn't the hardest one, it's the one you can enjoy and stick with consistently.
